How do you find domestic informality amid historic grandeur?
With high ceilings and generous proportions, this ground-floor apartment in West Kensington, London, has the grandeur typical of late Victorian and Edwardian mansion blocks. We found it in an unloved condition; our brief was to refurbish it for a client who wanted to modernise.
'We put careful thought into retaining the apartment’s original character and decoration'
We focused primarily on the internal reconfiguration of the space, altering the flow by widening doorways, enlarging the master suite and forming new openings which now connect previously isolated rooms. Light was pulled into the circulation spaces with carefully positioned translucent glazed screens and panels. We carefully selected the finishes for each space, creating a material palette with bespoke doors, windows, shutters and joinery.
