Malawi Books

What happens when the packaging becomes the structure?

The sponsors of this project were a consortium of construction industry organisations who supported a Unicef initiative to improve opportunities for children in Malawi. We designed a series of modular bookshelves that could be prefabricated, transported and easily constructed into small, yet adaptable, school libraries.

'While teachers inspire learning, we believe that architecture also has a part to play in supporting education and development'

We based the design on the idea that each school could easily assemble and adapt the shelves depending on their own requirements. Each shelf module can be stacked to display books, but also acts as a means of transporting books, eliminating the need for unnecessary storage and packaging.
